Staff, faculty and students can read, compose, and send email and attachments through a Web-based email client. To use Web-based email, you need Web browser software, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, and a computer connected to the Internet. Advantages include easier handling of attachments, increased space on the mail server, and easy-to-remember email addresses.

Before using Web-based email, be sure to read the Student Email Policy.
  1. In the browser window Address area, type: http://www.oit.cmich.edu/it/comp_op_email.asp, and press the computer's Enter key (or mouse over the My Email / Logins button at the top left of any CMU IT Web page).

  2. Click on the appropriate Web-based email link, either Faculty/Staff Server or Student Server. A login screen appears.

  3. On the login screen, enter your User ID for Username and your password, then click on the Login button.

  4. The email Inbox folder appears on the screen. The Inbox contains a list of all the messages you have received. Here are some basic functions you can do with Web-based email:

    • Read a message by clicking on the link in the “Subject” column. The individual message appears. To return to the Inbox list, click on the Inbox button in the menu bar.

    • Reply to a message by clicking on the Reply button that appears when you view individual messages. A separate message window appears with the sender’s email address already inserted. Type your message. Click on the Send button to send the message, Click on the Cancel button to cancel the reply and return to the original message.

    • Return to the Inbox by clicking on the Inbox button.

    • Create and send a new message by clicking on the Compose button. A separate message window appears. Type the recipient's email address, an optional Subject, and your message. Click on the Send button to send the message, Click on the Cancel button to cancel the message.

    • View other mailboxes in your account. If you have set up more than one mailbox for your account, click on the arrow next to the pull-down menu at the bottom of the screen to display a list of mailbox names. Select which mailbox you wish to view by clicking on the name.

  5. To exit Web-based email, click on the Logout button.
Note If you are using a public computer, such as one in a computer lab or library, be sure to use the Logout button to exit the email program. This ensures that other people will not have access to your account. Web-based email does come with a security function where, after a certain time period of inactivity, if you try to use Web-based email, you must reenter your password. However, to avoid problems, be sure to log out when you are finished.

  6. To learn more about the functionality of Web-based email, click on the Help button on the Web-based email screen.
