Note: Effective August 1, 2003, Central Michigan
University will begin gradual phase-out of the dial-up services. Under the
reduced service plan, CMU will preserve dial-up Internet access for all users in
the local calling area. Statewide Internet access will no longer be available.
Local users may access the university network by dialing 774-2224. See
ISP FAQs and Local
ISP List for replacement service information.
Note: To install Dial-Up Networking you will be required to insert your
Windows NT Workstation CD-ROM to copy necessary files to your computer.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Adding Dial-Up Networking (RAS Setup)
-
Double-click on your My Computer icon.
-
Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon. If you get a screen that asks you
which Phonebook Entry to dial, you already have dial-up networking installed
and may continue to step 21, which is the Dial-Up Account Configuration
section. If you get a box that explains what Dial-Up Networking is and has
two buttons labeled Install and Cancel, click Install to continue.
-
At this point, the utility will prompt you to put in your WindowsNT Workstation CD-ROM
so that it can copy some necessary files. Follow the on-screen instructions.
-
If you already have a modem driver installed, you will get a window labeled
"Remote Access Setup" with your modem listed. If this is the case, skip to
step 8 for configuration. If you do not have a modem driver installed, you
will get the same window with a box over it asking, "There are no RAS capable
devices to Add. Do you want RAS Setup to invoke the Modem installer to enable
you to add a modem?” Click Yes to continue.
-
You will next get the "Install New Modem" screen. Click Next to continue. The
system will try to detect your modem. If it is successful, click Next
to continue. If it cannot detect your modem, it will prompt you to pick your modem
from a list. Pick the modem description that is closest to your modem. Click
Next to continue.
-
Once you see the window that says, "Your modem has been set up successfully,"
click Finish.
-
You should next see a window labeled "Add RAS Device" and see your modem
listed under the RAS Capable Devices list. Click OK to continue. If you
do not
see your modem listed, it is not installed properly and you must re-install
the modem driver.
-
You should See the "Remote Access Setup" screen showing with your COM port and
Modem listed and highlighted. Click the Network button.
-
You should see the "Network Configuration" window. The under the "Dial-Out"
Protocols section, uncheck the "NetBEUI" option so that the only box checked
is "TCP/IP." Click OK to continue.
-
You should now be back to the "Remote Access Setup" screen. Click the
Configure button. Make sure that the "Port Usage" section is set to "Dial
out only" (or "Dial out and Receive calls" if you are going to have any
incoming calls to your machine). For PPP dial-up service this should NEVER be
set to "Receive calls only." Click OK to return to the Setup
screen.
-
From the "Remote Access Setup" screen, click Continue. The system will
complete the configuration process and then prompt you to allow your system to
be restarted. Click Restart to restart your system.
-
After your system has been restarted, double-click on your My Computer
icon. In the "My Computer" window, double-click on your Dial-Up Networking
icon.
-
Click the New button under the "Phonebook entry to dial" dialog. This brings
up the "New Phonebook Entry Wizard." You are prompted the name the new
phonebook entry. We suggest naming it CMUNET. Click Next to continue.
-
The next screen has three (3) check boxes. Make sure that they are all
checked. Click Next to continue.
-
The next screen prompts you for the phone number. Click on the box labeled
"Use Telephony Dialing Properties” The screen will change to allow you to
input the area code (517) and phone number (774-2224) of the CMU Dial-up pool.
Click Next to continue.
-
The next screen allows you to pick the Serial Line Protocol for networking. By
default this should be "Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)." This does not need to
be changed. Click Next to continue.
-
The next screen is for Login Script configuration. Dial-up to CMU does not
require a Login Script, so click Next to continue.
-
The next screen is for the input of an IP address. You are assigned an
IP address when you dial-up to CMU, so leave these all zeros (0.0.0.0), then click
Next to continue.
-
The next screen is for Name server Addresses. In the DNS Server section, input
141.209.001.022 and click Next to continue.
-
Click Finish on the next screen and you are done with the configuration.
This should take you back to the screen you saw at step 12 except you should
now see a phonebook entry called CMUNET with the phone number under it.
-
Click Dial. You should now see a "Connect to CMUNET" screen. At the
"Username" prompt, input your user name in the form: 3xxxxxx@cmich.edu where
xxxxxx = your Enterprise Server User ID. Press the TAB key to take you the
Password prompt to input your current Enterprise Server password. The Domain
section of the dialog box should be blank. Check the "Save Password" box if
you want it to remember your password. Click OK to connect.
-
You should see a box come up saying connecting to CMUNET and "Dialing 774
2224..." You should then see "Now verifying Username and Password..." followed
by a "Connection Complete” Dialog box. Carefully read this dialog to get
information about using the Dial-Up networking Monitor on your Task Bar and
how to disconnect from your session. Click OK to continue.
-
You are now connected to the CMUNET dial-up system and can use any Internet
programs such as Email, Netscape, etc. To get information about your session
or to terminate your session, double-click on the "telephone" icon in your task bar. This will bring up your
"Dial-Up Networking Monitor" which give you active statistics on your
connection to CMU and allows you to hang up the phone to terminate the connection.
