Note: Effective August 1, 2003, Central Michigan University will begin gradual phase-out of the dial-up services. Under the reduced service plan, CMU will preserve dial-up Internet access for all users in the local calling area. Statewide Internet access will no longer be available. Local users may access the university network by dialing 774-2224. See ISP FAQs and Local ISP List for replacement service information.

Follow this procedure to configure Windows 2000 for the dial-up connection to CMU. There are three parts:
1) the network connection,
2) TCP/IP settings, and
3) DNS settings.

Setting up the network connection:
  1. On the desktop, click Start > Settings > Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

  2. Inside the “Network and Dial-up Connections” window, double-click on Make New Connection.

  3. Click Next in the Network Connection wizard. Be sure to click "Dial-up to private network" when you are asked to choose a dial-up type.

Click Next, then enter the phone number you are dialing. This is 774-2224 if you are in the Mt. Pleasant area. If you are on campus, the number is 2224.

Please be aware that long-distance charges may apply if you are connecting to a dial up number outside your local toll-free calling area. Your local telephone service provider can determine if a dial-up number will incur long-distance charges. CMU cannot be held responsible for charges incurred from connecting to dial-up services.

Setting up DNS numbers:

  1. On the desktop, click Start > Settings > Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
