Note: Effective August 1, 2003, Central Michigan University will begin gradual phase-out of the dial-up services. Under the reduced service plan, CMU will preserve dial-up Internet access for all users in the local calling area. Statewide Internet access will no longer be available. Local users may access the university network by dialing 774-2224. See ISP FAQs and Local ISP List for replacement service information.

Follow this procedure to configure Mac OS X to connect your computer to the CMU network.

  1. Do one of the following:

From the Dock, click the System Preferences icon, then click the Network icon.

Or, from the Apple menu , select Location and then Network Preferences.

  2. In the Network panel, from the Configure (labeled as “Show” on OS 10.1) menu, select Internal Modem. If this panel is grey and inactive, click the lock icon in the bottom left corner to activate it.

  3. Under the TCP/IP tab, select Configure: Using PPP.

  4. In the Search Domains box, enter: cmich.edu

  5. Click the PPP tab, and in the Telephone Number field, enter 774-2224 if you are off campus and in the Mount Pleasant area; if you are on campus, enter 2224. In some areas, it may be necessary to dial a "1" followed by the area code and phone number.

Please be aware that long-distance charges may apply if you are connecting to a dial up number outside your local toll-free calling area. Your local telephone service provider can determine if a dial-up number will incur long-distance charges. CMU cannot be held responsible for charges incurred from connecting to dial-up services.

  6. In the Account Name box, enter your Global ID. If you wish to have your password saved, type your password into the Password field, and then check the Save Password option. Close the Network panel and, when prompted, click Save.

Connecting/Disconnecting

  1. While in the Finder, select Go and then Applications.

  2. Open the Internet Connect application.

  3. In the Internal Modem window that will display, enter your password into the Password box if the password is not currently saved.

  4. Click Connect. Your computer will attempt to contact the server, when a connection has been established, the Status will indicate Connected, and a Disconnect button will display.

  5. You can minimize Internet Connect to the dock, or quit it without affecting your connection. To quit, from the Internet Connect menu, select Quit Internet Connect.

  6. Once you have finished using the connection, you may wish to disconnect. To disconnect, in the Finder, select Go and then Applications, and open Internet Connect.

  7. Click Disconnect.
