Note: Effective August 1, 2003, Central Michigan
University will begin gradual phase-out of the dial-up services. Under the
reduced service plan, CMU will preserve dial-up Internet access for all users in
the local calling area. Statewide Internet access will no longer be available.
Local users may access the university network by dialing 774-2224. See
ISP FAQs and Local
ISP List for replacement service information.
Mac OS 9 comes
with PPP software which allows your computer to connect to the internet in
a manner similar to Ethernet, but at slower speeds.
Requirements for Access with PPP for Mac OS 9

To access the
Central Michigan University Campus Network you will need to know your Global
ID and your dial up password.

A Macintosh
Computer (A 233 MHz G3 computer or faster with at least 64 MB RAM recommended)

A modem (56
Kbps recommended)

Mac OS 9
Configuring Your Modem
(Note: You should only need to do this the first
time)

From the Apple Menu (
)
highlight Control Panels and select Modem.

The Modem Control Panel will appear (as seen below).

- From the
Connect via menu, select the port your modem is connected to.
Note: For most newer Macintosh computers ordered from Apple with modems
included, select Connect via the Internal Modem port.
- From the
Modem menu, select your brand and model of modem. If you bought
your modem separately from your Macintosh you may need to install the modem
software before it shows up in the menu list.
- Close the
Modem Control Panel window. Click Save if prompted to save changes to
current configuration.
Configuring TCP/IP
(Note: You should only need to do this the first time)

From the Apple Menu (
)
highlight Control Panels and select TCP/IP.

The TCP/IP Control Panel will appear (as seen below).

From the Connect via menu, select PPP.

From the Configure menu, select Using PPP Server.

Type cmich.edu in the Additional Search domains field.

Close the TCP/IP Control Panel window. Click Save if prompted to
save changes to the current configuration.
Setting Up Remote Access
(Note: You should only need to do this the first time)
- From the Apple Menu (
)
highlight Control Panels and select Remote Access.
- The Remote Access Control Panel will appear (as seen below).

- For Name, enter your Global ID.
Example: doe1jm
- For Password, enter your dialup password.
- For Number, type the phone number to connect to the CMU network from your
location. From within Mount Pleasant this number is 7742224.
From the CMU campus the number is 2224.
- Optionally, you can click the Save password checkbox if you want
your Macintosh to remember your password for you.
- Close the Remote Access Control Panel window. Click Save if prompted to
save changes to the current configuration.
Connecting to CMU and the Internet
- From the Apple Menu (
)
highlight Control Panels and select Remote Access.
- Click on the Connect button. You should then receive feedback
indicating the the modem is dialing and connecting to the PPP server.
- You are now successfully connected to the Internet. You can use your
web browser, check your email, or otherwise interact with others on the
Internet.
