To use email, you
need your Global ID and password. If you
don't have an account yet, you can activate yours by visiting the site:
New CMU Account.
Your Email Address
Your official CMU email address is your Global ID plus @cmich.edu. For example:
jones1je@cmich.edu
You can create an email alias and set up your CMU email account to forward messages to another
email
account, but you are still responsible for checking your CMU-related email
every day. Read and follow the CMU Student
Email Policy.
View or modify your account information by clicking on the My Email / Logins button
at the top of this page,
then selecting the My Account / CHANGE PASSWORD option.
Student Email Accounts
Student email accounts are accessible via
the Web at: http://student.csv.cmich.edu
Note: Students receive 200 MB of email storage. If you wish to share large files without filling up
mailboxes with large-file-size attachments, you can deposit files in the
FileBank (aka File
Bank).
How long after graduating are
students able to use their CMICH email accounts?
All
graduating students may keep their email account for life.
What if I primarily use an off-campus email account?
Students may forward their CMU accounts to off-campus email providers at https://myaccount.cmich.edu.
Please note that forwarding to an AOL account will result in CMU refusing incoming off-campus mail for that customer. This is a result of AOL incorrectly treating CMU as a spam relay in such cases where some of the forwarded mail is spam. CMU regrets the inconvenience this may cause our students but it is unavoidable due to AOL's poor policies and unwillingness to work with the university's IT department.
Faculty Email Accounts
The preferred faculty/staff email client is Microsoft Outlook 2007. With
Outlook, faculty and staff have access to the full functionality of Exchange
server including group calendaring. For assistance in setting up Outlook to
access the CMU Exchange servers, please review the Quick Guides listed at the
top of this page. Additionally, faculty and staff members may access their mail
and calendars via a secure Web interface at the site:
https://mail.cmich.edu/exchange.
Graduate Assistants with an active teaching assignment are eligible to be
migrated to Exchange for the duration of their class. Other student employees
are not eligible for Exchange migration.
To use the Web-based email, log in at the appropriate
site:
Student Server
Exchange Server
Note: Faculty/staff receive 200 MB of email storage.
To check current consumption level, in Outlook right-click on Mailbox – John
Doe, and select properties. Click on Folder Size. Examine the number labeled
"Total Size (Fld+SubFld)". For a rough estimate of usage, slide the decimal 3
places to the left. The value will indicate the number of megabytes used.
Departmental / Registered Student Organization (RSO) Accounts
Departments and Registered Student Organizations may request one generic email
account for conducting organizational business. Departmental accounts requiring
student access and all RSO accounts will be created on the student server and
are only accessible via webmail. Departmental accounts not requiring student
access will be created on the faculty/staff server. To request an account,
please use the following form:
https://listserv.cmich.edu/cgi-bin/lobform.pl
Backups
CMU E-mail servers are backed up for disaster recovery purposes only.
Since the mailstores are backed up en masse in a binary fashion, it is not possible to
restore an individual customers' email or mailbox.
Finding Email Addresses
To find an email address, visit the CMU online directory site:
http://www.cmich.edu/directories/
The CMU online directory provides a searchable interface for locating
student, faculty, and staff email addresses as well as faculty and
staff office locations and phone numbers. Please note that the
information provided is not complete as some students may have elected
to remove their listings for confidentiality reasons. Those students
wishing to have their contact information made confidential may do so
by contacting the Registrar's Office.
